The Old House Network is a nonprofit educational gathering of old house lovers. We teach people how to care for houses built before 1950 by hosting workshops and seminars.
The Old House Network Needs You! Our next big volunteer project will be the Great Unveiling in May, Preservation Month. On May 30th the Old House Network will be stripping the siding off the house at 716 Minor. In 2006 we stripped the siding off of 914 South Westnedge in four hours - take a look at it now! The Network is looking for volunteers to help discover what is under the siding at this house. The Old House Network will provide tools, equipment and food (if you like doughnuts and coffee and pizza). Do you like demolition? Does the idea of being given a crow bar and permission to use it make you happy? We can use up to 25 volunteers. Call the Old House Network at 269-349-2022 and leave a message for Pat or Sharon to volunteer.

Most of the houses in Kalamazoo were built before 1978 - the vast majority before 1955 when paint companies started removing lead from their products. Lead gave paints a tough smooth surface, but when the paint breaks up from wear and tear - or a homeowner starts a project that disturbs the paint, then there are serious concerns - especially for children. You can learn how to work on an old house safely to minimize your exposure - and your family's exposure - to lead hazards.
With funds from an EPA grant to the city and county, Lead Safe Work Practices classes on May 21st at the Edison Neighborhood Association, on June 18th at the Douglass Community Association and on September 24th at the Vine Neighborhood Association.
